Scoring
The tennis system broken down as simple as possible, a player must win:
- four points to win a game
- six games to win a set
- two (or, more rarely, three) sets to win a match
Every match starts with a racquet spin or a coin toss. The player or team who wins the toss has the option to:
- serve
- receive serve
- choose an end of the court
- have opponent choose
If team or player (A) chooses to serve then team or player (B) gets to choose an end of the court. (A) may serve from anywhere behind her baseline between the right singles sideline and the center mark. The serve must be hit before the ball bounces, and it must land in the service box diagonally opposite of (A’s) current position. (A) gets two chances to get a serve in. If (A) misses two serves in a row a double fault is called and (A) loses the point.
If (A) gets the serve in the appropriate box (B) must return the ball after exactly one bounce into any part of (A) singles court. (A) and (B) must then return the ball back and forth either after one bounce or out of the air until one of them misses.
(A) will continue to serve and start the next point from the left side of her baseline. And (A) will continue to alternate right and left until the game is completed.
The server should announce the score of the current game before every point and the set score before every game. The player serving always announces his or her score first. Games in tennis use the following scoring system:
Love, 15, 30, 40, Game
If team or player (A) is playing team or player (B) a match would progress like so:
(A) wins the first point: 15 - Love
(A) wins the second point: 30 - Love
(B) wins the third point: 30 - 15
(B) wins the forth point: 30 - 30
(A) wins the fifth point: 40 - 30
- now if Player (A) wins the sixth point he or she would win the game. But if (B) wins the point team or player (A) or (B) will have to win an additional two points to win the game.
(B) wins the sixth point: 40 - 40 (Deuce)
If (A) wins the next point he or she has the advantage, and the score is called "ad in," which means server’s advantage. If (B) wins the point, the score is called"ad out." If the player having the advantage wins the following point, he or she wins that game. If the player with the advantage loses the point, the score returns to deuce.
(B) wins the seventh point: Ad Out
(A) wins the Eighth point: 40 - 40 (Deuce)
(A) wins the nineth point: Ad In
(A) wins the tenth point: Game
With traditional scoring, games can go back and forth from deuce to ad over and over. The "No Ad" variation on the scoring within games allows for the first team or player to win four points wins the game. The traditional scoring system can be used with the winner of the first deuce point winning the game; however, with "No Ad" scoring players typically use a 1,2,3,4 scoring system with the first player to reach four points wins the game.
